No Flash Day

I'm always up for NOT using a flash because I love using available sun/ ambient light and that happened yesterday. Literally, the entire day I kept my flashes in my bag. The highest ISO setting I used was 400 which is great...! Yesterday's Wedding was by far the most beautiful day of all weddings this year and the Wedding facility at Saratoga Raceway had enough windows that I still didn't need a flash. 100% No Flash on any of the 4,500 images taken. Love when that happens which isn't common but love it. If a location had way too much direct sunlight, I would simply underexpose the shot of but and brightened up in Adobe Lightroom. That way, I don't miss out on any of the details by trying to get a perfect exposure which would have been overexposed, regardless of the metering. For those of you who love natural light, here ya go... for those who LOVE flash photography, I've just ordered a pair of Profoto Compact 600R with built-in Pocketwizard receivers. Love both and can't wait to use my 5 foot octagon softboxes. More portraits soon.

Shooting simple headshots

Simple headshots: These are always tons of fun to do and are ultra simple. First of all, you have to shoot wide open. All of these were taken with my Canon 50 f/1.2 which helps blow out the entire background. All I do is ask the model to squat down. Believe me, it's really easy until you have a Bride who's in a dress she can barely breath in but in those cases, you grab a chair and YOU get a little higher. When I shoot these, everyone always laughs at the amount of images I take, I literally shoot 100+ images. Because you're shooting wide open, if the subject moves 1/2 an inch forward or back, it'll throw off the depth of field (DOF). I'll always refocus if I feel that they've moved too far out of range but that's why I shoot on HIGH speed, it just helps to shoot tons. To me, it doesn't matter if they're moving because I'm bound to have at least 10 amazing images out of the 100+ I take. Sometimes it's a numbers game and yes, I shoot super fast and shoot tons. It was funny to learn that other photographers do the same thing but no one really let's you in on what they do. Check out the images below and please email me if you have any questions.
